The evangelistic mandate of the church calls it to proclaim the faith and to initiate believers into the faith so that they can claim a ministry as Christians.  The project examines baptism, the Body of Christ, the priesthood of all believers, and church structure.  It includes a workshop (six two-hour sessions) in which laypersons are guided to explore and claim their ministry. This project tests the premise that an exploration of this tradition will enable laity to witness to their faith.  A small study group of African-American Christians followed a curriculum based on Thomas R Groome's shared praxis model of Christian education, involving interaction with and response to Christian witness.  The study allowed participants to: examine the content of the church's evangelistic witness; explore the experiences of slavery and freedom which have shaped the way African Americans relate the Christian story; and identify prospective means of evangelism in which laity could become active. This project tested the thesis that the initial commitment of new church members to the congregation could be strengthened as the church helped new members discover and utilize their spiritual gifts in ministry.  The project involved six teaching sessions on spiritual gifts and a five-week ministry experience, matching new members' spiritual gifts with ministry needs within the church. The method tested was one developed by Paul Scott Wilson in his Imagination of the Heart.  For the practicum two groups of lay people were recruited: one was to help the pastor develop three sermons and the other to evaluate them.  The practicum discovered that Wilson's method is effective but is too involved to be used by most laity in a sermon preparation group. The aim of this project was threefold: to identify the problem of inactivity within the membership; to develop biblical/theological thought on inactivity; and to employ a pilot program to start the reassimilation process. The study extended over an eight week period in an effort to determine how well persons who participated in the groups, who also contributed to the sermon preparation, understood the message and text that was used as the basis for the sermon. It was then assumed that this goal is achieved through responsible communication. It was also assumed that responsible communication can be effectively learned through the dynamic process of experiential learning using a special form of communication known as couple dialogue.
