To test the thesis, a standardized questionnaire was given to patients of the Presbyterian Hospital chemical dependency unit in Oklahoma City; the questionnaires were  given as the patients arrived and also to 100 former patients who had maintained at least one year of sobriety.  Of the eleven pre-treatment respondents, nine were stage 2 and two were stage 3.  Of the 60 with at least one year sobriety who responded, twenty-eight were at stage 3, fifteen were at stage 4, and fourteen were at stage 5.
