The theological, historical and cultural factors in this phenomenon were first examined.  An ethnographic research project was then undertaken, with the usual consents and approvals, by Focus Groups before and after participation in the Renovaré Life Streams course by thirty members of the congregation in four study groups. This project defines a non-active member as one who chooses not to participate in the worship or mission of the church, yet retains membership in the body. Through personal interviews with twenty non-active members, the author uncovered the variety of reasons for their non-active status. Contrasting their responses, the biblical and traditional theological standards of discipleship and meaningful membership were examined. This process focused on the call of God with the intention that at the end of the experience participants would define a specific call of God to which they could respond. This project assumed that the articulation of a call would foster discipleship growth. The process proposed did not produce the desired results. The author concluded that 'the call of God is found in the needs of humankind and is embraced in the faithful response to those needs by a group'. All of this was compared with the results of a major biblical study about the church. From the research, an eight-week program to deepen commitment was designed, using two small group models: a Bible study employing guided individual research and group interaction, and a personal growth group based on transactional analysis. The particular genre is expository preaching.  The student's personal faith journey, theological views of Scripture and the embrace of expository preaching in discipleship development are highlighted.  The doctoral paper provides a description of the context within which the project was developed, and the motivations that led to the founding of the congregation.  The student implemented this strategy through a series of expository sermons followed by a focus group to reflect, respond, interact and evaluate relevance, contents, form and outcome.
