The community group that organized to resist the facility's construction was well organized and active, but manifested parochial and anthropocentric characteristics.  The author hypothesized that through sermons, a study group, and an eco-justice statement, members of the Mount Jackson Presbyterian Church would come to understand eco-justice from a more global and theocentric perspective. It relates its findings to a church which exists in an individualistic society, but which is committed ethically to becoming more community oriented.  The project describes five phases of development: 1) the establishment of a congregational unemployment task force; 2) the involvement of the Butler Unemployment Task Force (BUTF); 3) the incorporation of human resource agencies; 4) action taken by the BUTF on behalf of unemployed and underemployed; 5) the incorporation of the wider church. The format is a non-residential facility receiving probationary or paroled offenders referred by the court or self upon release.  The client reported twice weekly for twelve months and received spiritual and psychological support and a full range of social services for self and family.  Insights from process theology provide the theological perspective.
