Three critical moments punctuate the account: the first was when growing appreciation of God's sovereignty provoked the reconception of the original title 'What is the Holy Spirit doing in the church?'; the second was when a large portion of the congregation mutinied; the third was when the working hypothesis, of a network of renewal,  failed. The thesis was, God impacts and transforms Samaritan volunteers through face to face encounters with the migrant, 'Jesus.' The research included interviewing eight participants who gave 'testimonios' that documented evidence of transformation. The evidence parallels Mark's Gospel where Jesus called people to follow his 'Way' that ultimately transformed all areas of a person's life. Through a series of sermons and a seven-week study using the book 'Resident aliens', terms, concepts, and ideas were explored connecting the mission statement and discipleship. Administrative board and church members were invited to participate (22 participants). Since the project was implemented, our average Sunday morning attendance increased by twenty percent. This 'nurturing' model of the church is the antithesis of the missional church.  The missional church seeks to be faithful to the 'sent-ness' of the Gospel.  As God sent the Son, so the Son sends his disciples.  Faithfulness requires an outward orientation.  Using the research of David Bosch, Darrell Guder, and others, this project was an attempt to move Trinity Presbyterian Church of Mercer, Pennsylvania from an inward, nurturing perspective to a posture that cares for the wider world. This lack of clarity produces a frustation in both lay people and pastors which may cause them to move from one church to another or to leave the church altogether.  This project developed an eight week adult Sunday school class that explored the roles and expectations of clergy and lay people.
