Through lecture and discussion, the project examined churches' views of Scripture and, moreover, whether they uphold the Bible as the only source of authority in the Christian life and Church.  Classes clarified understanding and deepened the participants' appreciation of sacred tradition while guiding them in discernment of the Church's call and purpose. This paper examines traditional practices, and considers their implications for future exercise of ministry. Continuing that faith is a problem facing its multi-national members living in North America since the late eighteenth century. Specifically the problem centers on a single parish in Berkley, Michigan where second and third generation descendants of Middle Eastern immigrants are losing interest in the church and the cultural heritage of their parents. The workbook will be used for individual or group grief work. The historical, theological and biblical research will help to substantiate the need for such a book. The project will formulate the historical perspectives on suicide and will identify the spiritual issues that burden the bereaved. Proactive research will come from a case study, a support group survey, professional interviews and workbook evaluations already in existence. The researcher explores difficulties First United Presbyterian Church encountered getting a ministry to the economically disadvantaged established called Peter's Place. The project is based on the proposition that increased congregational awareness concerning poverty and homelessness would create greater support for the ministry among the church's membership. A series of Community Forums was held with different community advocates about poverty, unemployment and homelessness throughout Charlotte. The author offered some Trinitarian teaching aimed at demonstrating that while congregations have their distinctive features they are to reflect something of the communion within the Trinity (perichoresis). A questionnaire on worship and ministry was conducted, some theological reflection encouraged and an evaluation undertaken. It further demonstrates how scripture and Orthodox tradition enhance ministry to the alcoholic and addict. Finally, the project provides clergy with a 'handbook' to effectively ministry to alcoholics and addicts and their families. It addresses this through a 250-member Presbyterian congregation in Mount Airy North Carolina, home to Andy Griffith and the fabled town of 'Mayberry.' Through a twelve week sermon series and a small 'focus group,' this project seeks to discern the ways in which preaching can shape and inform a congregation's theological 'self-understanding' as it desires to become a more missional church.
