The answer was discovered through organizational research and interviews of leaders within thirteen parachurch organizations. Eight key lessons were identified: (1) The board is responsible for leadership transition. (2) Transition requires a well-articulated vision. (3) Transition must be an ongoing process at all levels of the organization. (4) Transition takes time. (5) The new leader's job description and profile must be developed. (6) The process must be well-defined. (7) Determine the role of the former CEO within the organization. (8) The respective functions of the board and the new CEO must be defined. Mentoring, or life-into-life ministry, is the most intense form of community and therefore holds potential to stimulate the most intense spirituality. In a survey of current literature, this study noted the dramatic explosion of mentoring into the everyday life of our culture.  The current relevance and effectiveness of the biblical, historical, and current insights on mentoring were tested among seminary students and women's lay ministries and a paradigm for mentoring was constructed from the results. The foundation for the answer is found in the Biblical teaching that holds the purity of God's church in tension with the growth of God's church.  The Bible consistently exhorts leaders to be attentive to both purity and growth, not emphasizing one to the neglect of the other. Only a comprehensive understanding of Biblical teaching can produce a theology of assimilation that guards the church from both extremes. A survey of church history demonstrates the difficulty of maintaining this balance, as the church at times has been too exclusive and at other times too inclusive. An examination of the confessions and creeds of all major denominations reveals a consistent recognition of three criterion that must be met in order for one to be admitted into the full privileges and responsibilities of church life, mainly through the time-honored traditions of church membership and church discipline.  These high standards are largely neglected in the North American church today, resulting in a spiritually weak, theologically illiterate, and largely unregenerate church. This dissertation examines the pastoral ministry of Jonathan Edwards as a case study for developing a theology of assimilation. Special attention is paid to the process, rationale, circumstances, and missteps leading up to his dismissal from the Northhampton Church. The answer to this question has its roots in both the Old and New Testaments and is played out for us in the historic development of spirituality from the early Desert Fathers, through the Reformation, and into our present time. The focus of this work is that when these areas of study and discovery are opened the average member's spiritual life benefits and the member experiences a closer relationship with the Lord. Analysis of the issue is based on surveys of those who participated in an eleven week course of study covering the development of spirituality and the disciplines historically associated with spirituality. The foundation of understanding this question is rooted in his calling to lead the covenant community.  The minister is called by God not only to preach but also to serve as a leader of worship.  Many ministers surrender their role as worship leader to others and view their responsibility in worship to be limited to 'bringing the message'.  It is vital that every Presbyterian minister re-examine his role as the primary leader in worship as it is an important part of his calling. Can an efficiently organized and properly administered assessment model help select strong and competent church planters who in turn will train other church planters? The scriptures provide the foundation for assessment of others to whom the work of God is to be entrusted.  We are commanded by the scriptures to search for reliable and qualified men who will teach the doctrines of the church and proclaim the Gospel.  Church planting is just one of the many ways that the church does this.  If the church is to be faithful to the command given by Paul, then we must search for reliable and qualified men to plant Christ's church.
