It used a case study method that observed ten spouses of deceased cancer patients.  The author planned and implemented the pilot project to meet the needs of the spouses.  He conducted five training sessions with three spouses and took each spouse to visit two other bereaved spouses.  The project included the trainees' views about the development of a lay grief counselor network. The author created a program that employed a lecture series format incorporating techniques not usually used within church outreach programs, presented in an interactive, casual style, using a 'soft sell' approach.  The program revealed that these people can be reached spiritually.  Their reliance on story and relationship precludes the use of any formulaic approach.
