Christianity and its Eucharist are Euro-American cultural exports not identified with Japanese or Asian culture and images. This project examines the need for Christianity to identify and become indigenous with Japanese and Asian culture.  The project demonstrates how the Chanoyu (Tea Ceremony), which best represents Japanese culture and spirituality and which has been used in Japanese Christian history, can become the Japanese Eucharist. The dissertation draws on the writer's experiences as a Rotuman working with Rotuman, English and Fijian speaking congregations in Fiji and Australia.    Methodologically, it pursues a social analysis of the community's culture and faith through interviews with people in different places.  It also describes the performance of live cultural events with worship.
