Demands of discipleship in Seventh-day Adventist congregations often cause Hawaiian converts to drop out rather than break their connections with family, culture, and lifestyle. It is based on a theology of covenant evangelism.  A central thesis of this work suggests that church membership is not simply a specific rite but is an ongoing covenantal relationship in a community of faith. The dissertation analyzes the five passages of the New Testament on the subject, reflects on centuries of Catholic practice and tradition, states current church law, presents the damage of folklore about divorce and remarriage, and describes support groups. This project determines the value of these principles by reviewing and summarizing some theologians, including those of the Wesleyan or Nazarene tradition, identifying and evaluating the contributing factors, and determining by a case study of local Nazarene churches the value of church growth and decline principles.
