In chapter 1, the significance and aim of the study are stated.  An effort is made to clarify authority in Christianity in chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses the authority of the pastor in the church.  The authority of the pastor in the Korean church is dealt with in chapter 4.  The following chapters examine the authority of the pastor in the PCK by means of research and personal interviews (twelve hundred pastors and congregations are included). Using the perspective of the ministry studies of the United Methodist Church, the author analyzes pertinent data from scripture, church history and ecumenical agreements as well as social factors of time periods when the various forms of the diaconate (deacon, monastic orders, deaconess, diaconal minister) were strong, and concludes that the office of deacon is important as a representative ministry and embodiment of Christ's call to serve. Nine United Methodist congregations ranging from 500 to 999 members were studied. Reconciliation is a central biblical/theological motif, providing a relational conceptualization of the work of Christ and describing God's intervention into the human situation to overcome enmity and restructure actual relationships of persons to God, themselves and one another.  The church's ministry is one of announcing and demonstrating God's reconciling work in Christ, and of participating in the restructuring of human community in its own life and in ministries in the world. Pastoral ministry is an office of accountable public leadership involving three main responsiblities: labor in Word and doctrine, facilitation of the faith-development of the members, and leadership of the ministries of the church.
