Although they comprise a significant proportion of lay leadership, deacons are frequently underused and appear to flounder.  This project examines this ministry of the deacon and provides specific options for its improvement.  Through the use of surveys and in-depth interviews, the project identifies four pivotal areas where deacons appear to flounder: 1) biblical-historical roots; 2) understanding their role as 'the Body' of Christ; 3) servanthood; 4) purposeful organization. A theological understanding of life, death and ministry was developed from biblical and secular sources.  Divided into six sessions, the educational experience utilized group discussion, audio-visual presentations, simulations, and visitation. Templer's 'Death Anxiety Scale' and subjective self-reporting were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational experience.
