Reference materials relating to pastoral care as hospice care were examined.  The biblical and theological understanding of death and dying were also reviewed. Interviews were conducted for volunteer hospice caregivers, hospice medical doctors, hospice chaplains, dying patients, and the bereaved families. Progressive steps of support for the critically ill are discussed as follows: the hospice way of caring; rediscovering supportive ministry; commitment to a supportive ministry; facing the fear of death; a theology of hope; and the spiritual rewards for the clergy in pastoral care to the terminally ill. Since this prediction is rapidly becoming a reality, the author shows the viability of this ministry. He researched the theological/biblical basis, the historical background, and the lives and ministries of ten bivocational and five full-time pastors in order to understand this ministry.  Information gathered was used to develop a workshop manual in the areas of time management, pastoral counseling and educational opportunities.
