This dissertation proposes that pastors conscientiously plan and present corporate music accessing insights from educational theory. Pastors in three churches of different sizes and demographics in the San Francisco Presbytery were interviewed. Hundreds of pastors and educators from Canada and the United States were interviewed in groups.  Literature was reviewed in the fields of the theology of music; educational theory; music the Reformed tradition, and current socio-cultural trends. Finding ways to ease the fear of change can help people be more receptive to learning.  Provide information in a variety of ways.  Involve people in the interpretive process. This dissertation traces the tradition of hymns and hymnals, biblically and historically, then, in its project, proposes new indices for any hymnal, to aid in bringing the tradition of hymns to life in the local church.  The project is based on The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990).  A chronology of both texts and tunes is offered, with a historical narrative index describing the historical and theological movements in hymnody. It examines how these shifts were interpreted to adult Lutherans through worship education materials prepared by the American Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Church in America between 1960 and 1987.  The project is an adult instruction course, based on the liturgy and using an action-reflection method of instruction. This project points out the misuse of hymns in worship. Korean ministers do not know much about church music, worship hymns, gospel hymns and gospel songs, or about the relationship between hymns and theology. Missionaries to Korea used many gospel hymns to spread Christianity.
