Most confirmation experiences involve youth in early adolescence.  Yet studies indicate these same youth often 'drop out' of the church 3-5 years later.  Why?  This dissertation is an attempt to answer this question and seek an educational approach to help a confirmation experience be more effective.  The approach used is one developed by Christian educator Thomas Groome and is known as 'shared Christian praxis.' A microcomputer simulation on hunger was prepared and tested in junion high church school classes. Half the classes used a computerized simulation, half a similar noncomputer simulation.  Students and teachers evaluated the simulations.  Both groups enjoyed and appreciated the simulations.  Students were challenged to think about hunger issues.  Teachers found the computerized simulation easy to use and were willing to do other simulations. The interview technique was adapted from a study done by William Perry and based on the faith development models of John Westerhoff and James Fowler. Those who were active in the church's youth program displayed a number of characteristics including: supportive parents, some type of emotional 'faith experience,' and a significant relationship with another adult for whom faith was important and meaningful.  Those interactions are more significant in some ways than the curriculum or program used.
