An historical study, it begins with an overview of EATWOT, showing the marginal role of its women members. Consequently, the women formed a commission within EATWOT with its own program of 'doing theology from the perspective of Third World women.'  The rest of the chapters focus on the growth of the women's theological consciousness, first corporately through the work of the commission, then individually through the separate stories of eight of its members. The dissertation probes New Testament material, historical material, and current thinking on ministry, including interviews with fifteen ministers in Churches of Christ, to provide some theological thinking about ministry.  In spite of some lack of clarity, the ministers interviewed showed remarkable agreement that preaching was their defining role. This dissertation traces the tradition of hymns and hymnals, biblically and historically, then, in its project, proposes new indices for any hymnal, to aid in bringing the tradition of hymns to life in the local church.  The project is based on The Presbyterian Hymnal (1990).  A chronology of both texts and tunes is offered, with a historical narrative index describing the historical and theological movements in hymnody. The project applied grief counseling methods to eight declining rural churches.  The project demonstrates that grief is part of rural churches and grief counseling leads to new identity and renewed vitality.
