Research into why people do or do not forgive was made through personal interviews, questionnaires and literature search. The family unit as a system was reviewed and three therapeutic counseling methods designed to bring forth forgiveness were examined. Data revealed realistic actions that can be taken to improve pastoral counseling and provide for healing among family members. Rather than instructing clients in acts of forgiveness, Patton suggests that clients should be helped to become more authentic as persons so that forgiveness of self and others can be discovered and realized. On the biblical foundation of forgiveness and reconciliation, which is God in Christ reconciling the world to himself, the project reviews the history of human hate, sin, and rebellion that is repeated once more in 'ethnic cleansing' and war in the former Yugoslavia.
