This rural church was in decline while the community was growing.  Church membership and leadership questionnaires along with demographic data assisted the church to discover her identity.  The Witness Training Institute helped train lay volunteers to share their faith in Christ with the community at large.  In a three-month period, twenty-one people joined our fellowship. The project included: two sermons, thirteen teaching sessions, and a congregation-wide education activity.  Responses by the participants were compared to a similar group at Elizabethtown Baptist and the sophomore class at Bladenboro High School.  The project met its purpose and goal, but the small population sample made statistical inference inconclusive. Giving to support a church budget, therefore, is dependent upon clearly stated missional objectives of a church.  This project developed a ministry action budget for Rockville First Baptist Church. A theological rationale for ministry action budgeting was developed from the biblical concepts of mission and stewardship, and the historical role of the church as community institution and change agent.  Using that background, the church's leadership established a budget philosophy.  A ministry action budget was then developed. Hospitality, defined as a gracious openness toward church guests, was revealed as a major biblical theme.  The program included questionnaires to members, visitors, pastors, and special visitors who documented their experience of welcome.  The project's core was a workshop followed by project actions seeking to maximize the visitor's sense of welcome.  Focused interviews of participants assessed their growth. The project was a test of the 'triangle theory of church growth' which is based upon three interdependent and interrelated principles: spirituality, ministry, preaching/teaching.  These three principles were evaluated by a committee process in relation to selected biblical passages and the ministry context in question.  An outside evaluator analyzed the theory and the committee's work. Chapter 1 presents the report of the US Surgeon, C Everett Koop, as to the medical myths and facts about AIDS, and the unsuccessful attempts of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross to build a local clinic for children with AIDS.  Chapter 2 gives a biblical, theological, and historical view of the treatment of lepers, a metaphor chosen for modern AIDS patients. Chapter 3 offers a description of an eight-week program designed to reduce the resistance staff members feel toward AIDS patients and the research instruments used to measure the effects of the group. Pre- to post-implementation changes were measured in perceptions of pastoral contact, convenience of communication, church and pastoral ministries, and worship attendance.
