The specific facet of mentoring considered is discipleship in leadership development and deployment. A 13-week mentoring program on leadership development and deployment was developed which focused on character, content, and competency. Lay-leaders where mentored through the project both individually and in small groups. Those team-members being led assessed the lay-leaders before and after the mentoring program. The lay-leaders' significantly improved in the areas of 'follower-ship' skills, knowledge and understanding in the discipline of leadership, and leadership skills. The project seeks to design a process for developing biblically healthy pastoral leadership. Chapter 1 presents the purpose, goals, context, rationale, definitions, and limitations of the project. Chapter 2 discusses biblical and theological perspectives on leadership in the lives of Jesus and Paul. Specifically, this chapter develops the role of servant leadership in the ministries of Jesus and Paul, and espouses it as the biblical model. Chapter 3 surveys leadership as an intellectual discipline and presents a model for biblically healthy pastoral leadership. This chapter also explores the dynamics of team based leadership and gives examples of disciplines common to great leaders. Chapter 4 explains the creation and implementation of the Arizona Leadership Network. Attention is given to the five developmental phases of the project and to the transformational development of a leader from personal leadership to organizational effectiveness. Chapter 5 provides an evaluation of the project goals along with modifications that could be made to strengthen the project for future use. This chapter considers theological foundations for mentoring. Chapter 3 considers Christian and secular perspectives on leadership including evaluation, communication, working with people, planning, and vision. Chapter 4 presents methodology and content in the project. Two areas of research have inspired the author: the biblical principles of Nehemiah, Jesus, and Paul, and the insights of James Kouzes and Barry Posner, from the secular arena. Sixteen persons selected from the congregation participated in a nine-week leadership-training class. The purpose was to delegate many responsibilities of the ministry to leadership teams.  This resulted in more singles becoming involved.  Twenty-five singles were surveyed to determine their attitudes before and after the project.  Leadership teams were selected based on several factors, then trained.  A large single adult conference was the focal point of the project.  The results of the study showed little affect on the singles' attitudes.
