The author will lead the group in discovering important biblical truths, as well as certain characteristics of servanthood.  The group will then be encouraged to nurture the church and community by developing a committee known as SON (Serving Our Neighborhood).  The author accepted the call of pastor on January 10, 1999.  The congregation at First Baptist is composed mainly of retired people who have moved to the Broaddus area due to its proximity to Lake Sam Rayburn.  The people of First Baptist appear uncertain of their calling and specific ministry for the community. It is the aim of this project to offer a focus and an opportunity for the church members to realize their potential as servants and to discover their unique calling from God. The church will then transmit that calling into a ministry suited for the community. Enlisting a target outreach group to apply innovative evangelistic techniques reinforced by door-to-door pastoral visits in the community, the project brings the 1-5-4 principle of church growth as taught by Gene Mims to the attention of the congregation in 10 sermons emphasizing the importance of evangelism for every ministry of the church. The project will include preaching an eleven-week series of sermons on Sunday mornings that focus on five biblical functions and four specific needs of the church.  The functions and needs include evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, worship, commitment, organization, vision, and prayer.  In addition, a series of lessons will be taught on Wednesday nights that focus on the same functions and needs. However, the Wednesday lessons will differ from the Sunday sermons by highlighting different aspects.  A better understanding of the functions and needs should result in developing effective ministries. The aim of the series is to present the need for a shift in ministry focus that leads the church to revitalization and both spiritual and numerical growth.  New ministry options will be explored and examined by a Task Force. The response to the problems will be practical application of the biblical principles of Christian social involvement. Specifically, an attempt will be made to lead an urban church in decline to become revitalized and to grow spiritually and numerically by developing and implementing an after-school ministry program. This program will address the spiritual, emotional, educational, and physical needs of elementary aged children in the Riverside area of Fort Worth, Texas. The children will be recruited from Oakhurst Elementary School in cooperation with the principal and the administration. A group of approximately twelve people will be led through an awareness and training program to help them see the need for and to equip them for a ministry of this kind.
