Fifteen newly elected deacons participated in in-depth training to gain better understanding of spiritual gifts and their use in deacon ministry, attending eleven classes as a part of the project.  The entire diaconate participated in a small portion of the project. The project involved academic study and research at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Hardin-Simmons University. The new deacons fully participated in the Deacon Training Class and are using their spiritual gifts in ministry at Pioneer Drive. Elements of the project included the use of a training program developed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, a series of sermons by the pastor on deacons and lay ministry, and a more in-depth study on these subjects.  Methods of study included the project activities, the evaluation of these activities, and consultation of numerous bibliographical resources.  The thesis includes biblical, historical, and theological studies on deacon ministry.  As a result of this study, deacons were held in higher esteem by the congregation because of their increased visibility and involvement. Some inactive members did return to the church. The writer developed a project within his local congregation designed to respond to these needs for the church, the prospective deacons, and their families.  The pastor developed a pretest, posttest, accompanied by appropriate training, for all groups of participants.
