It is even more difficult in a congregation made up of members from the baby boomer and baby buster generations.  These individuals have an aversion to making commitments.  This project teaches deacons how to maintain involvement of baby boomers and baby busters in an effort to reduce the growing number of inactive church members.  The project begins with training of deacons over seven weeks.  Deacons then interview inactive members to determine what factors led to their reduced involvement. Elements of the project included the use of a training program developed by the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, a series of sermons by the pastor on deacons and lay ministry, and a more in-depth study on these subjects.  Methods of study included the project activities, the evaluation of these activities, and consultation of numerous bibliographical resources.  The thesis includes biblical, historical, and theological studies on deacon ministry.  As a result of this study, deacons were held in higher esteem by the congregation because of their increased visibility and involvement. Some inactive members did return to the church.
