This dissertation takes a thorough look at Romans 6:1-14 in order to prepare a homiletic outline from which a sermon series is developed. Paul's situation, purpose for writing, and flow of thought are analyzed, and the verses are then studied in the original language. The terms 'gospel,' 'kerugma,' and 'contextualization' will be defined and delineated. Examining Paul's sermons in Acts with those by the early Apostles (Acts 2:14-42; 3:12-26) a unified threefold rhetorical methods and message is discovered. The contextual nature of each sermon was utilized as a basis for addressing the spiritual needs of those within the emerging culture. In a series of six sermons, the project leader dealt exegetically with the Acts texts and made applications to postmodern traits. Concurrent to the project leader's preaching, a focus group met for ten weeks to explore postmodernity and to assimilate a training manual. It uses his primary works (especially City of God, Confessions, On Christian teaching, Commentary on Galatians and 84 propositions from the Epistles of Romans) as they develop Paul's theology of sin. It builds a theological foundation (based on four theological issues about sin: its origin, its nature, its consequence, and its remedy) in order to establish a correct understanding of the topic of sin in a contemporary context. Ultimately, it utilizes that information to develop a practical theology that is integrated into applicable Christian living in four areas: soteriology, evangelism, ecclesiology, and discipleship.
