Chapter 1 discusses the rationale and background of this research. It explains the value of survey research and the principles and parameters of the survey process. Chapter 2 includes the descriptive statistics and frequency tables and then enumerates the survey findings. This project led students to develop an understanding of a theology of the cross along with its practical implications for their personal lives and for their own ministry opportunities. Since theology is itself a dialogical discipline, a small group of students was enlisted to study together a theology of the cross as well as how they could apply a cruciform theology throughout the Baptist Student Ministry. This project lasted for one semester and attempted to include all of the students that were involved in the Baptist Student Ministry Program. The majority of the work, however, was completed by a smaller, select group of students. A larger group of students were asked to evaluate the testimonies, devotional materials, and sermons prepared by the select group. It also includes an assessment of existing programming of the Southern Baptist Convention North American Mission Board International Ministries at UH, and suggestions for future ministry strategies. The purpose of the research is to find out if, and why, students from varying geographic regions and/or cultures respond differently to the person of Jesus Christ and Christianity in general. What influences their attitudes toward Christianity? What factors attract them toward or deflect them away from Christianity? Their needs were evaluated and a task force of laypeople from a local church was equipped with a strategy of friendship evangelism to reach out to the students.  A series of twelve training sessions prepared the laypeople with information about select cultures and religions most represented at Memphis State University.
