Research data was gathered through personal interviews from six participants who were enrolled in an independent secondary school where participation in community service was a requirement for all students.  The literature review includes research learning theories as well as a theological framework of service. The author hypothesized that this might be accomplished by substituting three rites of spiritual passage for the customary infant baptism and confirmation.  Drawing on the liturgies of the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and United Church of Canada and the work of developmental psychologists he designed three rites of passage and tested them in his congregation over a period of two years.
