Liturgy involves a multidimensional language that is both verbal and non-verbal. The qualitative research explored the question: What lived experience makes worship meaningful for persons within the United Church of Canada? Conversations with three women and three men were taped, transcribed and developed into narrative stories. Subsequently the author identified themes within and challenges for worship through analysis and hermeneutic exploration. Relevant worship themes included: hospitality, space, embodiment, and a felt sense of authenticity and awe. Challenges for worship include: the development of hospitable ways for welcoming persons; the involvement of each of the senses through signs and symbols, stories, songs and structure; the importance of worshippers having a felt sense of authenticity with worship leaders; and a need for the church to affirm persons' experiences of awe in nature and daily life."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130335153487873,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:29:57.972Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:26:35Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:58:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"56770f18-e19a-4651-9637-6f75e5410aea","accessControl_ssim":["3b9e286f-bef8-4dae-8f65-8d354ecd8a89"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["In search of the lost soul: the experience and meaning of estrangement"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:26:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:40:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fa811ddb-089c-47eb-b852-a68d17e5b84a"],"hasLease_ssim":["453e1efb-8b4f-4477-a303-60cc1e366c3b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Stephen's College (Edmonton, AB)"],"advisor_tesim":["John C Carr"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Francis Christopher Coffin"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Stephen's College University of Alberta"],"subject_tesim":["Alienation (Social psychology)","Prisons and prisoners--Canada","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This phenomenological research involved in-depth field interviews with four male inmates. Two co-researchers were chosen for this study. The author used image dialogues with her mandalas, while open-ended interviews were conducted with the co-researchers to gather the themes for this research. The terminally ill and dying are privileged to the vision of God. The research helps us to become more aware of the ways in which God's Mystery is revealed in the final transition of life. It can also help health care professionals see that the mystic path is a route for radical transformation of the self. The lived experiences of the terminally ill are untapped resources. Their stories can help the Church better understand the spiritual dimension of the struggle with suffering, illness, and death and help the Church envision new ways for delivering pastoral care to dying persons. This study is qualitative in nature, blending Grounded Theory methods, as developed by Glaser and Strauss, and a heuristic method. The study concludes with implications for ministry to the terminally ill."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720457338880000,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:06:16.874Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:22:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:33:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"723f8834-0784-43c1-89aa-07abeb00cba4","accessControl_ssim":["407c0e8c-2156-4f00-8fb2-bdc64f01f49d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Calling or co-optation: revisioning ministry in the United Church of Canada"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:22:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:28:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a4469024-65a6-448f-a4f3-298532d83200"],"hasLease_ssim":["43000572-b012-4d54-9a1f-82a8972eb433"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Stephen's College (Edmonton, AB)"],"advisor_tesim":["Gordon Oaks"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kathleen Marie Heuer"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Stephen's College University of Alberta"],"subject_tesim":["Feminist criticism","Church work as a profession","Deacons--United Church of Canada"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project/dissertation explores ministry in the United Church of Canada from the perspective of a feminist ecclesiology. Using a feminist approach to qualitative methodology, nine diaconal ministers were interviewed to examine their reasons for choosing ordination. Personal and systemic reasons emerged, including sense of calling, need for education and employment security, career development, contextual influences and church policies. Sexism and the marginalization of diaconal ministers were factors. This dissertation analyses the tensions between hierarchical privilege and feminist perspective, and proposes recommendations for the revision of ministry leadership, particularly the re-vitalization of diaconal ministry as oriented towards the world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126813865410560,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:33:59.810Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:21:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:44:22Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"10ff1dd5-bde2-492e-8ebc-82e6af4b48e9","accessControl_ssim":["73a69ea6-fedd-45c5-85cb-c77df3040d62"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["More than meets the eye: visual medium for ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:21:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:37:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["32186280-06ce-4fb6-8b55-f9e85fc542cb"],"hasLease_ssim":["5e65d05b-bb7a-4292-8098-5b7a4abb8fd0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Stephen's College (Edmonton, AB)"],"advisor_tesim":["Frank Henderson"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sarah L Harris"],"publisher_tesim":["St. Stephen's College University of Alberta"],"subject_tesim":["Feminist psychology","Spiritual formation","Audio-visual education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["A resource for ministry describing the universal search for transformation was prepared and evaluated using the theoretical bases of theology, feminist psychology, adult education and spirituality. The resource includes a video, 'Through the Pane,' and a study guide, which offers a process for viewing this artistic rendering of transformation. The process initiated by the study guide was critiqued and the data from the respondents were analysed through qualitative research methodology. Shortcomings within the initial study guide were identified and a revised study guide is included in the dissertation. The implications for this unique resource include the challenge it presents in using media as a tool for ministry, and the need for the church and theological schools to embrace, in tangible ways, the transformative power of images."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715304888074240,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:44:23.115Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:13:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:57:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"53885d44-7100-429e-b53f-093beb5874db","accessControl_ssim":["4a81414d-b430-4051-8e56-dd5ab2761030"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Tearing the veil: a poetic journey toward wholeness"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:13:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:34:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["55eb1e01-01bd-489d-a254-4b6d18c58df6"],"hasLease_ssim":["09d1dfce-4c36-4ab2-b066-68869d09bdc0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["St Stephen's College (Edmonton, AB)"],"advisor_tesim":["Leslie Gardner"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Clark, Diane L."],"publisher_tesim":["St. Stephen's College University of Alberta"],"subject_tesim":["Ignatius, of Loyola, Saint, 1491-1556","Animus (Psychoanalysis)","Spiritual exercises","Anima (Psychoanalysis)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that the use of a Jungian approach to the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius, together with the extensive use of creative arts, can increase the relevance of the Exercises to the contemporary journey towards wholeness.
