The author hypothesized that this might be accomplished by substituting three rites of spiritual passage for the customary infant baptism and confirmation.  Drawing on the liturgies of the Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and United Church of Canada and the work of developmental psychologists he designed three rites of passage and tested them in his congregation over a period of two years. The author concludes that the intern experienced andragogical learning about the issues studied; that lay persons can handle the method; that mathetic information about an intern's behavior-in-ministry can be gathered and displayed to aid the process; that further field-testing seems warranted by the findings. Through written response sheets participants described how the process of symbol participation deepened or redirected their trust, meaning and commitments, i.e., their faith.  The report concludes with a print and audio tape leader's guide. It examines the research data which measured changes in participants and a control group in six major areas with significant changes in only two categories.  Comparable tests with interns did not show similar results. A sense of awe, wonder and mystery emerged as the prerogative of reverberation characteristics.
