Since usual prayer forms are not helpful during times of emotional breakdown, the author designed a course in prayer, using both verbal and non-verbal modalities.  Using a phenomenological methodology, the study demonstrates that by expressing pain in a community of co-sufferers, the participants were able to discover new images of God, and new ways of praying while experiencing acute suffering. Aids such as books, audiotapes, weekly meetings and a guide were provided.  Research included an initial interview, an interim evaluation and a final evaluation (written and oral).
