This assessment yielded data from which pastoral interventions were identified, compared and classified according to the similar use of signs and symbols in faith expression. A specific focus is put upon grief as expressed individually and corporately.  Research was done with individuals and the congregation as a whole.  A qualitative approach was used, blending the themes of grounded theory and participant observation.  Specific methods included a journal, conversational interviews, and liturgical services.  Positive results were gained from having individuals and the congregation deal purposefully with their grief rather than denying its reality. The project involves the recruitment, training and deployment of a small group of senior lay pastoral and sacramental assistants in a suburban Anglican parish.  The author uses phenomenological research methodology, and as participant-observer describes changes in the participants' self-assessed spiritual status, using as data before and after interviews.
