To this end church leaders across the author's denomination were surveyed to develop a baseline for how people integrate their faith with their lives. Instructional materials were prepared and presented to people from within the author's church and these people were also surveyed. The evaluation was based on a review of the development processes and observations of the outcomes eight years later. The monolithic culture is composed of historic residents, while the pluralistic culture pertains to those new in the community. Two outreach services have been developed to penetrate these cultures. The second chapter surveys the writings of three influential schools of thought in discipleship and how they interplayed with the author's views on discipleship. It also explains some historical factors which have affected the church's disciple making ministry. The third chapter records the steps taken to improve the church's ability to make disciples. These steps cover many areas: small group ministries, organizational documents 9such as the constitution and by-laws), adult education ministries, leadership development structures, and staffing procedures. Often those of us who find ourselves in these situations look for a pre-packaged program that will simply plug into the current church. The research discloses that pre-packaged programs have a fatal flaw in that they are not transculturally friendly. It also discloses that it is better to develop a program based on the specific culture in which the church is located. This project seeks to address and answer the question of how local churches survive and thrive in the shadow of the mega-churches. The focus of this project is to define the options those churches have in metropolitan areas. Options are limited to the strategies suggested by Lyle Schaller in his book, 21 Bridges to the 21st Century. The history of Latin American Christianity reveals that the gospel has not been fully and meaningfully communicated, and that traditional methods, which have been strictly theologically oriented, have been polemical and relatively unsuccessful. Chinese preachers need to uphold the value of expository preaching, and at the same time, endorse the use of imagination and be more image-sensitive. The proposed expository-imaginative approach, with an emphasis on first 'exegeting the Word' and then 'imagining the sermon,' serves to bridge the apparent gap between a didactic, logical, linear preaching and a postmodern, post-literate, multimedia
