Local churches need to become healing communities for hurting people in the society.  The hypothesis of this project is that, through an equipping program, participants would experience self-worth, confidence and affirmation of their spiritual gifts.  As a result, more people would volunteer to help others and there would be qualitative and quantitative church growth. This study is based mainly on library research. The goal is not to isolate the therapeutic benefits of the spiritual disciplines, but to grow in godliness.  Doctoral classes and library research were combined to create an eight-session class which focused first on intimacy and spiritual intimacy.  The remaining six sessions dealt with the spiritual disciplines of the Word, meditative prayer, simplicity, forgiveness, service and worship. Converted in 1910, 95 per cent of the Hmars are now Christians, and the majority of them, according to the author, are still tradition-oriented.  The paper gives a biblical response to such beliefs and practices.  The method includes case studies, interviews, phone calls and personal letters. This paper studies the reasons for church-mission tensions and proposes general solutions leading to a specific strategy.  The author, in addition to library research, draws upon his own personal experience of 13 years in Zaire.  A new model for church-mission partnership, characterized by mutual responsibility and interdependence is suggested. Called 'project mode,' this new paradigm for participatory partnership was submitted to 23 mission organizations for their evaluation. Its theological conviction is that the incarnational shape of Jesus' life should also be the shape of the church's ministry: a ministry that is of the whole people of God, guided by its public servants.  The project was also built upon the psychological/sociological thesis that lay helpers can have significant outcomes in their peer counseling. Included is an extensive exposition of biblical narratives and directives in the New Testament that indicate the need for the local church and her leaders to be intimately and extensively involved in the whole process of raising up men for pastoral ministry. Current missionary activities in Japan are examined.  A survey was conducted on the teaching of missiology in Japanese seminaries.  Both surveys confirmed the need to establish a clearer understanding of evangelical missiology in Japan.  David J Hesselgrave's textbook, Today's choices for tomorrow's mission, is evaluated as being the best choice among missiological texts for Japanese Christians.  The question whether a dynamic equivalent translation is better than a formal translation is discussed. The study includes three interviews with healers and five church member case studies. The author outlines a game-plan utilized by Satan in which he uses culture as a means of keeping people from Christ. The study focuses in on three potential problem areas: Satan's method of undermining the believer's relationship with God; our human desire for quick-fixes; and, possible areas in practical theology that need to be
