At Trinity Church (Aurora, Ontario, Canada), as with most Anglican churches, spiritual formation has been through corporate worship and private devotions. Laity do not tend to speak about the spiritual experience and consequently can lack confidence in spiritual leadership. To address a perceived weakness, a project was developed using appreciative inquiry and focused sermons to move congregants to develop friendships with non-Christian neighbours. Reported responses included a need for heightened awareness to engage the unchurched, to practice a higher level of acceptance and hospitality, to have greater intensity in serving the community, to provide relevant programming and to communicate the need to practice self-awareness when ministering to the unchurched. The study was an action research using a qualitative phenomenological approach. A reflective program, named 'Uncommon-8-weeks' was designed and introduced to the congregants to practice reflection on eight sermons preached for eight consecutive weeks. Research result identified seven aspects of post-preaching reflection: remembering, considering, connecting, self-examining, desiring, planning, and acting. People from around the world with different customs, values, and beliefs are now living in close proximity to each other. To effectively engage in ministry in such a multicultural context will require leaders to intentionally develop competencies for their intercultural journey. This research project examined how ten three-hour sessions of training delivered over a 16-week period impacted the intercultural competency of eighteen Christian leaders from diverse cultural backgrounds. Three conceptual models that were foundational in designing this training: Bennett's 'Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity' (Bennett 1998), Deardorff's 'Process Model of Intercultural Competence' (Deardorff 2006), and Berry's 'Model of Acculturation' (Berry 2005). Both the IDI assessment and participant feedback suggested a significant development of intercultural competency of the members of the study group, indicating that a training intervention such as this could increase a leader's motivation, cultural self-awareness, knowledge and skills enabling them to navigate the complexities of intercultural ministry.
