Missionaries and colonialists alienated Gikuyu lands and also rejected their traditional religion and culture. Field research included questionnaires and group interviews in rural and urban churches of the Roman Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church of East Africa and the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa. The research discloses elements of Agikuyu traditional religion and culture could be integrated into Christianity making it truly relevant. Jesus Christ can be appreciated as ancestor, prophet, liberator, medicine man, and sacrificial lamb. The author and nine members of St John's United Methodist Church in Gbarnga, Liberia, studied the book of Exodus and focused on issues of contextualization. They identified issues common to Hebrew and Kpelle cultures, and considered tribal elements such as proverbs, stories, idioms, and theology. The result was the production of a Bible study teacher's guide on Exodus, and an awareness by participants of anwers to their questions about how to make the Christian Church relevant in their context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129255235551232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:12:48.082Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":3,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"John M Kallon","hits":1,"label":"John M Kallon"},{"value":"John S Lindberg","hits":1,"label":"John S Lindberg"},{"value":"Njenga Kariuki","hits":1,"label":"Njenga Kariuki"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology, Contextual","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Contextual"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Christianity and culture","hits":3,"label":"Christianity and culture"},{"value":"African American interpretations of Jesus Christ","hits":1,"label":"African American interpretations of Jesus Christ"},{"value":"Africans--Religion","hits":1,"label":"Africans--Religion"},{"value":"Bible.
