Through a program based upon the gestalt cycle of experience and conducted in a university context, alienated Catholics were encouraged to redefine their religious symbols. The lessons sought to combine current social science moral development theory with religious and theological insights so as to support and enhance moral/spiritual development.  Foundational to the project was a theory base and paradigm produced by the author outlining and defining morally/spiritually rooted cultures.  Robert Kegan and James Fowler influenced this material.  Research included the field test and the development of a Moral/Spiritual Awareness Inventory which was also used in a limited external sample.  The inventory does seem to measure moral/spiritual development. Over a period of three weekends Sinhalese and Tamil Sri Lankan students shared experiences with host families and members of Cove Spring Church.  Participants experienced increased sensitivity, trust, respect, appreciation, willingness to risk, and reconciliation in this venture.
