The other purpose was to create a play which could be used by readers' theater groups or even be staged in churches. The resulting play needs further development before it is ready for publication, but the learning experience of the lay people was considerable.  Their enthusiasm, new knowledge, and personal growth were great. These workshops were designed to foster continuing education and personal growth relating to grief and anger issues faced in the hospital context.  Preworkshop and postworkshop questionnaires were used to gather information.  The preworkshop questionnaires showed an adequate understanding of both anger and grief. A survey was devised whereby information was gathered from the parish concerning what strengthens or weakens faith.  The survey responses were analyzed and collated.  Significant areas were identified and a ten-week project was devised around the most pertinent aspects of faith building.  The project was named 'Soaring To New Heights.' Such preaching becomes a form of pastoral care for the people of God. Through a program based upon the gestalt cycle of experience and conducted in a university context, alienated Catholics were encouraged to redefine their religious symbols. The themes of the study are: communication, commitment, love, equality, and sex.  The study was constructed with the help of peers and project associates.  It is partially based on similar materials developed by Esco McBay.  It was tested on a group of couples in the Wellsbrug United Methodist Church, Wellsbrug, West Virginia, to see how effective the study would be. The lessons sought to combine current social science moral development theory with religious and theological insights so as to support and enhance moral/spiritual development.  Foundational to the project was a theory base and paradigm produced by the author outlining and defining morally/spiritually rooted cultures.  Robert Kegan and James Fowler influenced this material.  Research included the field test and the development of a Moral/Spiritual Awareness Inventory which was also used in a limited external sample.  The inventory does seem to measure moral/spiritual development. Results included a demonstrated change in lay leadership which provided key elements in the program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
