The model was developed by a twelve-person task force from within the existing congregation using The Phone's For You as the starting point.  Effective marketing and group dynamics within the existing congregation were key concerns.  The task force participants grew in their understanding and practice of church growth and evangelism. When implemented, 170 people attended the first service. Two panels - local leaders and leaders with denomination-wide responsibilities - suggested and responded to 67 societal and 72 denominational scenarios about future situations in the denomination.  The report identifies and analyzes the panel response to the 'top ten' societal and denominational issues and discusses the role of the General Council on Ministries in addressing the issues in the future. The project involved a series of workshops that taught people a variety of spiritual exercises and the biblical/theological foundations for spiritual gifts; provided definitions for the gifts of the Spirit listed in Scripture; and, discussed the implications of gifts discovery in the life of the congregation.  The workshop participants answered pre-workshop and post-workshop questionnaires which were analyzed according to the contributions of psychological type theory. This integrated perspective is used to understand the material presented in two extensive case studies.  Implications for the practice of pastoral care are explored by examining the pastoral functions of attending, assessing, and intervening. The model involves the pastor and a lay team in two sessions to identify the narrative of the church's story.  A survey solicits information and stories from a cross-section of the church membership.  The project showed positive results in that teams from four congregations participated and indicated that they did enjoy, relish and learn from the congregation's stories of life and faith and were helped to discover a number of factors which form a congregation's identity. In the model a district superintendent develops a supportive pastoral relationship with three clergypersons.  They engage in a process of identifying their personality types, sharing their life journeys, and working with the superintendent to develop a performance covenant to move them to effectiveness.  This is part of a larger design in which the district superintendent is viewed as the bonding agent for vitalization in the United Methodist Church. Developed by the Episcopal Church as the 'Alabama Plan,' subsequently revised, and tested in two United Methodist churches, this model involves congregants in a stewardship event whereby they identify, share and revise their personal stewardship stories in the light of Scripture study and therein make their personal stewardship decisions.
