Local church teachers participated in an individual and group reflection process  based on Thomas Groome's 'shared praxis' approach.  Pre- and post-process measurements indicated an increase in the teachers' valuing of their own faith experience, satisfaction in teaching and sense of purpose of teaching. The research was undertaken in response to the challenge by local, state and national government officials to religious bodies who were encouraged to give their time and money to meet the needs of people which were no longer met through tax dollars.  A list of 98 different outreach services was identified. The Faith Development Model of James Fowler is used as a check of this program. Pastors in six Protestant denominations responded to questionnaires. Children from four Protestant denominations were surveyed. The data is described and analyzed.  Children in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) seem to have less membership identity than children in the Lutheran and Episcopal churches. Models are: Niebuhr's Christ as transformer of culture, Dulles' church as mystical communion, and Niebuhr's minister as pastoral director.  The family may act as a small church.  The thesis states that it is appropriate to use the form of the Family Home Evening Program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in a United Presbyterian Church (UPC) using UPC content.  Twelve sessions were written. Seven LDS theological beliefs regarding families are considered and compared with UPC beliefs.  This presupposed that LDS theology gave more support to families than UPC beliefs. The thesis concludes that beliefs of one church are as strong for its members as beliefs of the other church are for its members. A theoretical chapter argues that religious experiences are unique and qualitatively different from natural experiences without, on the opposite extreme, becoming irrelevant magical supernatural events.  Research, by test and interview, explored the relationship between religious experience and service.  Results: People from mainline churches claimed religious experiences that associate with natural reality and extend service that is humanistic and personal in orientation. Family aftercare is critical in chemical dependency treatment.  Church, pastors, and local communities need a strategy to participate in this aspect of treatment.  The author uses a process theology perspective in developing an approach to pastoral care and counseling.  Methodology involved research in family therapy and chemical dependency, and implementation of aftercare sessions developed for recovering families.  The report concludes that clergy and the local church should participate in counseling families following treatment for chemical dependency.
