As a result, there has been an increase in the number of volunteers who perform ministerial roles once reserved to religious professionals. These volunteers often have not received the spiritual formation of their professional predecessors. Drawing from the U.S.C.C.B. document Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, the author has created a program of spiritual formation for parish lay volunteers. On-site observations and in-depth interviews of thirteen non-ordained pastors and some of their significant parishioners in five Midwestern dioceses who pioneered these appointments form the basis of this study.  Among the conclusions: most parishes, after an initial period of stressful change, adopted well to this new form of pastoring.
