The black church has been the main source for growth opportunities for black Americans, but the church has not been able to address all the needs of mind, body, and spirit.  Ministry in the black church will have to be holistic in order to adequately deal with the multiple needs of black people. Growth-groups can assist black people to explore internal, debilitating conditions, and can help create changes in perceptual awareness. Such worship should take account of the way people develop morally and spiritually.  The models of Lawrence Kohlberg in moral development and of James Fowler in faith development are examined and related to current concepts in Christian worship and social ethics.  Five worship services and sermons were used to test developmental strategies on social-ethical themes.
