The author examined the meaning and importance of volunteer works from the Bible and history. In addition, the author studied John Wesley's movement of revival and his practice of love, and discussed the influence on personal and social holiness through it. Next, the author practiced a project called 'Diakonia Training School' for five weeks for ten members of Beautiful Church. All of the participants experienced many changes in their personal faith and the community of faith through the training. Using the Wesleyan quadrilateral to structure a theological foundation, the author argued that engagement in such concerns is essential to both. The author presented a project that provides one way to link the works of mercy to a congregation's understanding of its Christian identity and practice. The author completed the project by interviewing congregants who were engaged in the project. As a way of understanding character, this project offers a conceptual model for four negotiations that constitute the human endeavor for making decisions.  The project introduces these negotiations to participants, invites them to identify one, and gives them an opportunity to consider current social issues with those of like negotiation.
