The three areas of study were: 1) 'Developing Guidelines for the Preacher's View of His Role in the Pulpit'; 2) 'An Analysis of Three Dominant Preaching Styles Found in Western Culture'; and 3) 'Alan Monroe's Motivated Sequence as a Preaching Paradigm'.  This study used the quasi-experimental method of research with a randomized control group pre-test and post-test design. After studying the training of elders as described in the New Testament, tracing the history of theological education in the United States, and conducting case studies of some contemporary church-centered training programs, the author concluded that it is feasible for local churches to train pastors.  The hypothesis was tested in a training program conducted by the author at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon.  Five students were trained in hermeneutics and homiletics over a six-month period. Factor analysis determined five dimensions of religiosity named orthodoxy, personal faith, treatment, satisfaction with life, and dissatisfaction with life. Comparison and correlation of factors and items found a positive attitude about life and more so about congregations.  Men want to feel more useful to their congregations.
