The basis for the research was Living Hope Church in Vancouver, Washington, which is also an evangelistic next-generation church.  The research design used a multi-method approach employing archival, experimental, and ethnographic approaches.  The sources for research came from the Bible, websites, books, magazines, newspapers, conferences, government publications, churches, e-mails, personal interviews, and surveys. The author first clarifies what addiction is, explores why it is intensifying, and explains how this intensification affects pastoral work. In the second chapter, relevant literature is examined from the twelve-step movement, the helping professions and pastoral writers -- locating a core of tested wisdom pastors can utilize. This project examines the mindsets of modernity and postmodernity alike, with a view toward preachers understanding and engaging the habits of modernity and skepticism of postmodernity through the lens of the gospel of God and its crown jewel, the cross of Jesus Christ. Whereas postmodernity asserts that truth is what one makes it and the reader imports meaning into the text rather than derives meaning from the biblical text, preachers must allow the biblical text to say what God intends to say rather than substantiate postmodern indictments toward scripture and its interpreters. The church, with over four hundred attendees, is blessed with equal proportions of first and second generation Filipinos with about two hundred in each population. The study used a survey to gather information on their ethnic identity, their experience at church, their evaluation of church ministry, as well as their aspirations for the future. In this paper the author makes the case that equality of essence on the one hand, and permanent subordination on the other -- whether applied to the Trinity or the relationship between men and women -- is a questionable premise and is not supported logically, historically, or biblically. Coaching is about creating a supportive relationship that encourages intentional action, forward movement and improved and sustained performance. Three churches in the Portland/Vancouver area served as the focus for this experimental research project. There is a predictable development pattern for the EM in a typical immigrant church, and key steps that must be taken in order to allow it to grow to maturity. Two areas that are explored in detail are leadership development, including leadership structure, and the influence of ethnic identity and other factors on the decision of adult ABCs about attendance of a Chinese church.
