This research was held in January 2009. During this phase the author wrote and mailed invitational letters to pastors and churches to participate in her research. Based upon the response and support she received from the invitational letter the end results yielded one leadership team which was represented during the entire research.  A workshop and seminar was held at a selected church within the county once a month. The author's personal interviews were designed to identify the various stages of the HIV/AIDS virus and to assess the family needs. The ends results yielded that, as persons progress with the HIV/AIDS virus, the greater the need and care is required by the family. Yet because transmission of HIV/AIDS often involves forms of sexual contact and/or substance use which are condemned in most Christian communities, and because many persons living with HIV/AIDS have had deeply painful experiences with Christians, prejudice, fear, and pain create a gap between Christians and persons living with HIV/AIDS.  AIDS education within church communities needs to bridge this gap.  This project is a ministry tool in which Christian communities interact with a body of artistic work in order to shift misunderstanding, prejudice, and fear concerning persons living with HIV/AIDS.  The project shows that art can be used to bring about understanding, transformation, and dialogue. Its epicenter is sub-Saharan Africa.  This project looks at the response of one faith-based organization, SIM International, with its strategy 'HOPE for AIDS'.  The author uses qualitative research methodology and theological reflection to analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of SIM's response.  Lessons learned: the importance of strategic partnerships; affirmation of those involved; engaging membership at all levels; reflection on best practices; analysis of needs and possible responses; perseverance. The programs were designed to create a sense of understanding, compassion and desire to reach out to victims. This qualitative study used pre- and post-survey data, community events, workshops and designed worship services to increase the awareness of the virus. Particular theologies, doctrines, morals, and ethics of various religious traditions have contributed to the beliefs, attitudes, mores, and behaviors which have negatively influenced public policy regarding HIV/AIDS and harmfully impacted persons living with, and affected by, the disease.  This project defines the theological and religious barriers to HIV prevention and care and describes the personal and sociomoral impact these barriers impose on the public health system and public policy as well as persons living with HIV disease. This particular retreat was held in western North Carolina during the fall of 2002. There were twenty-nine participants and fifteen staff who attended the retreat.  There was a daily rhythm established of proper nutrition, educational elements, worship times, play, and small group dynamics.  The participants learned about the importance of diet, exercise and mental health in living with a terminal disease.  They also learned about the importance of story, personal and sacred.  The participants had opportunities to experience God's love through accepting attitudes, unconditional love and agape gifts.  Relationship building activities were conveyed through small group dynamics and community activities in the craft area. Three goals were set up, measured and achieved during this retreat.  Participants experienced reduced anxiety. Participants had an enriched experience of their belovedness in God.  Participants gave voice to their spiritual deepening.  There were positive changes recorded in each of these assessed goals. If HIV/AIDS patients are cared for, they will live longer and their lives will be more fulfilled.  The threat that the disease presents to society is highlighted, the natures of the disease is looked at, the needs of the patients and attitudes towards them are explored and the church's response is considered.  The research reveals that the church is not adequately responding to the needs of HIV/AIDS patients.
