None is more essential than shame.  Survivors need help in moving out from trauma and humiliation to celebrate goodness and right to joy. After presenting some psychological and theological foundations of shame, this project explores various treatment modalities and presents combined treatment (individual and group therapy with the same therapist) as a powerful tool to identify and treat shame. Clinical data prove the effectiveness of this modality. When the survivor fails to attend to his sexual needs and desires, he experiences this as wounding and defends against the fragmentation of his masculine self by activating his 'masculine defense,' a masculinized narcissistic defensive structure.  Empathic attunement is provided and the wounds experienced and defenses activated in relation to the survivor are interpreted in the context of the partners' own history of trauma. Undergirding this project are the psychological studies showing that children's representations of God are usually formed from internalized images of parents; these early images of God usually remain influential in a person's life.  The research was conducted by means of individual interviews with both oral questions and printed word-pairs regarding the participants' parents and their current and childhood God-images.  The data showed that the survivors' God-images generally did have characteristics similar to mothers.  The data also showed that generally the more severe the incest and the earlier the onset, the more negative the God-image of the survivor. The theological perspective is taken Jurgen Moltman's understanding of the suffering God. The paper includes a report and analysis of a workshop organized and led by the author and Gretchen Helm, EdD.  The workshop provides insights taken from an experience of reactions to the issues raised by the sexual abuse of female children.  Because the paper deals exclusively with counseling female survivors the biblical and theological perspectives are weighted toward the feminist perspective. The author interviewed fourteen such survivors, male and female, according to an interview schedule designed for breaking silence and raising the issue to public consciousness.  The data reveals that all participants in the project except one were sexually abused in their own childhood homes and most by multiple perpetrators, male and female. Many of these women keep the abuse 'secret.'  As a result they must deal with its long-term effects in their adult lives.  These victims come to therapy with a false presentation.  Underlying the neurotic symptoms they present are the long-term negative effects of sexual abuse.  The project outlines cues to identification and a suggested treatment plan for post-traumatic stress disorder that includes both individual and group therapy. A review of the literature as well as case material supplements the
