The project explores such bias and oppression and assesses women's responses through analysis of James Baldwin's play, The Amen Corner, and interviews with African American Presbyterian ordained and lay women. The research discloses that women do not adequately understand the nature and ramifications of sexism in African American Presbyterian life. The first members of the McClintock Church faced the poverty, prejudice, and persecution which surrounded all ex-slaves in the South as they adjusted to their new political freedom.  Special attention is given to the missionary efforts of the Freedmen's Committee of the Old School Presbyterian Church as it sponsored pastors and teachers in the South. The founding pastor of McClintock Church was the Rev Samuel C Alexander of Shirleysburg, Pennsylvania.
