However, the African-American church and American culture exist in a reciprocal relationship; changes in American culture have impacted the African-American church in numerous ways. In order to maintain its relevance, the African-American church must undergo transformation. Working from the hypothesis, 'The pastor as theologian can lead an historic, urban congregation through a journey of transformation from being a congregation of commuters lacking significant presence in its surrounding community to one that is more responsive to the needs of the community and maintains a felt, empowering presence,' l initiated a five-step discovery process. This process becomes the first step in the transformation journey. The process consists of: a series of sermons, ethnographic interviews with a sample of the congregation, a tour of the surrounding community, a panel discussion with community leaders, and a network mapping exercise."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://repository.westernsem.edu/xmlui/handle/1866/1770"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135661692026880,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:54:37.754Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:36:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:50:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6190f0d8-ac03-4b57-8c36-9b9a62721456","accessControl_ssim":["32657d1c-7f2f-4f84-b132-0b1a0e97090e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["African American churches and green ministry: African American church and community empowered through resolution of climate change and environmental racism"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:36:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:59:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bd4af9a3-c24c-4b6e-88ac-a6df252123bf"],"hasLease_ssim":["de084b90-f6a5-4850-ba03-5c1a2b7c01dd"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William B McClain"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author recommends that worship leaders, planners, and preachers infuse spoken word urban worship centers so that those spaces might be more relevant and reflective of contemporary urban African American culture. To explore this notion, the author planned and executed a learning and worship experience that demonstrated and discussed spoken word as sacred art for sacred space. This work was received positively and resulted in subsequent opportunities to share spoken word in sacred space."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720435681591296,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:05:56.220Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:11:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:22:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5d5a4dd5-003d-48d7-ac73-725ac9528571","accessControl_ssim":["42649673-4e5d-478c-8c4d-3434dd62b5ab"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A critical analysis of preaching in the National Baptist Convention, USA, Incorporated: the socio-cultural and existential reality of women"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:11:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:52:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["7a0f7547-b134-4e30-8b70-f0d8d9b9dea5"],"hasLease_ssim":["efdb9bfe-6f35-4c90-b869-77081b64d89c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Iliff School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Eunjoo Mary Kim"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Valerie L Jackson"],"publisher_tesim":["Iliff School of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Economic conditions","Baptist women","African American churches","Social conditions","Northern Baptist Convention","Women","African American women"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["A Critical Analysis of Preaching in the National Baptist Convention USA, Incorporated (NBCUSA): The Socio-Cultural and Existential Reality of Women reveals that the largest branch of the Black Church is failing to fulfill its legacy of speaking prophetically against the mistreatment of all human beings, which is ostensibly believed by the Black Church to be a sacred violation. A group of 18-26 year olds will partner with a fifty-something pastor in sermon preparation for three months. The group will reflect on selected biblical texts and provide insights for sermon development. Data from the group, the preached sermons, sermon evaluations, and interviews with key stakeholders will inform recommendations for next steps.
