The black church was once the social, cultural, and political sanctuary of the black community. Today, in many ways, the black church has distanced herself from the norms and mores of the African American struggle. Her agenda is disconnected. Her programs are irrelevant. Her social engagement is faint and distant. Her influence in the community is extraneous. As a result, black millennials, who represent the largest cohort of African Americans alive today, have waned in their attendance and commitment due to theological and ideological dissonance. Research regarding black Millennial beliefs and behaviors reveal that they have not rejected their faith in God, but they no longer see the church's relevance amid the challenges of everyday life. The resurgence of the Black Church depends on her willingness to engage black millennials by transforming herself into a culture that is loving, accepting, and embracing of the gifts, talents, and diverse nuances of the black millennial generation.' -- Leaf [2]."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791126740542685184,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:32:49.884Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:07:16Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e0112fc6-ce68-4239-bfe7-0f45e89aa757","accessControl_ssim":["ed5306b0-f5f9-4ce9-9b62-498568339ff8"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A call to action : identifying and actualizing the social justice voice of the First Baptist Church of Highland Park"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:19:54Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:32:55Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3dfd0ecb-bf9d-4958-8612-bac7cb7f5952"],"hasLease_ssim":["0f047b98-17f5-491f-a058-68d4aa1c2c71"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["C. A presentation entitled, “God’s Black Children,” traced the spread of Christianity from the Day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, through Africa, through the Middle Passage, and to the Gullah people of St. Helena, SC. The first objective was to determine the extent of the knowledge of a sample of 144 Black Christians including bishops, pastors, deacons, and parishioners from South Carolina, Georgia, Africa, and the Caribbean. With the exception of bishops and pastors, a majority of the deacons and parishioners indicated that they did not know: (1) that the “Disciple Mark founded the first African church” and (2) that the “major doctrines of the Christian faith were hammered out in Africa.” A majority of all groups indicated that they did not know (3) that “Ethiopia became a Christian Nation in 328 AD, 50 years before Rome”; (4) that the “Kongo Kingdom was a Christian Nation for 128 years before slavery”; (5) that the “first 100 years of slavery on St. Helena, all Africans were Kongolese”; and that “Christianity was practiced by enslaved Africans on St. Helena for 250 years.” A large majority of all groups agreed: (1) that this information should be taught in churches and seminaries or shared with others; (2) they will preach or teach the material in the future; and (3) that they would be interested in learning more from the book, God’s Black Children."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130964769898496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:58.421Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:00:57Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:55:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1b20ecc5-41d9-4ce2-b2b9-ef2ebcf71b2f","accessControl_ssim":["12160e4e-18a0-496b-8675-e0805e748043"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Multiple Case Study: Participative Decision-Making in Four Black Indiana Churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:00:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:55:45Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b257f03b-ca86-42ee-a657-6d238303e8c6"],"hasLease_ssim":["724c0b56-a5b1-4e1e-8a82-36d81439115c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Church Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Bethel Seminary (St. Paul, MN)"],"advisor_tesim":["Stephen Gibson"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["Indiana"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Michael S. Four themes emerged from the study. They included effectiveness, unified involvement, decision parameters, and trusted leadership. Effectiveness related to support for a decision. Unified Involvement was about members’ sense of belonging. Parameters involved areas where certain groups had discretion in decision-making. Three churches were discovered that had formed by the merger of a White Church of Christ with a Black Church of Christ. A study of the multiethnic dynamics of the early church provided the biblical and theological foundation for this project. Special attention was given to Galatians, Romans, and Ephesians, as well as the Jerusalem Council of Acts 15. The researcher discovered that the Church was multiethnic from its inception. The researcher then researched the literature concerning multiethnic churches in America, Churches of Christ, and church mergers. These three streams of literature converged in this project and based on the literature the researcher created the research instruments for this project. The researcher then traveled to the three congregations. Questionnaires were distributed at the end of Bible class times. The researcher also took field observations at these locations. Phone calls were set up to interview key leaders after these trips. The data was then coded and analyzed for trends. The following key findings for best practices in multiethnic Church of Christ mergers were discovered. Churches should pursue unity with other churches. Mergers take time and leaders must be patient. Putting together the right steering team is vital. In most mergers, only one of the two ministers will last more than five years. The eldership should reflect the diversity of the church."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://cdm16120.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p16120coll4/id/1470"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Bethel Seminary (St. Paul, MN)"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fccbc3d7-874c-42e3-8a20-621b107c56c7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132476203073536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:03:59.835Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:59:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:08:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8c8d1c12-17c3-41c5-a70e-569ca95453a1","accessControl_ssim":["b40b838a-b642-4881-b4f6-03e0db20954c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prophetic Activism: Increasing the Academic Achievement Among Low Performing African-American Male Students at Mary B. The location of the work was two Black churches in the North Georgia Conference of The United Methodist Church and included preaching a variety of sermons, followed by congregational research on the influence of the sermons on church growth. Through this project, the thesis on which this work was based, that church growth was a direct result of good preaching, changed to recognize that while preaching alone does not cause church growth, it is one of many significant factors in the decision to join a church. The project reveals that a comprehensive church system that includes elements such as preaching, outreach, nurture, Christian education, evangelism, and worship, is necessary to impact congregational growth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/pqdtglobal/docview/2414416557"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134898954698752,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:42:30.352Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:56:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:46:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fabad819-892c-4b74-9425-d27c3fc93c51","accessControl_ssim":["93aaa985-70cd-46c6-b116-00cdb340a489"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Legacy of Hope - Moving Beyond Boundaries"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T18:56:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:17:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["224bdf46-8a7f-486d-88d1-ed893617608b"],"hasLease_ssim":["c3cd6261-8dd8-4e64-8b4b-6d35c7d039a7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Community Organizing"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Angela Cowser Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["Virginia"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Mt. Hope Baptist Church is a historically African American church nestled in a moderately rural Virginia community, which is in the midst of an enormous population, socioeconomic, and demographic transition. How will this community transition impact Mt. Hope? The purpose of the research was to determine what effect, if any, a relational meeting campaign and two multicultural, multiracial Christian education classes would have on incorporating multicultural, nonblack attendees into the life of Mt. Hope Baptist Church. The research determined that the threshold to incorporate multicultural, nonblack attendees into the life of Mt. Hope Baptist church has been traversed. The formal and informal relational meeting campaign with key leaders and nonblack worship attendees as well as two Christian education classes influenced the five measurement protocols towards a propensity of acceptance to multicultural ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/pqdtglobal/docview/2415869591"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135150050902016,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:29.815Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
