Although most faith-based community development corporations are established and sustained by larger, African American congregations, this study contends that small churches also have the capacity to achieve effective community development corporation outcomes in economically distressed neighborhoods. In an effort to implement the participatory action research (PAR) model, this researcher sought to facilitate the process of empowerment and social change through the development of three training workshops for pastors and ministers and one final evaluation session that summarized and reported on the input from the target group. It was expected that, through this process, the researcher and the participants would gain an increased awareness of the biblical/theological and historical foundations of community economic development; the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to launch a community development corporation; as well as the challenges associated with engaging in community development. There were six major implications drawn from the results of this research project. Each needs the attention of church and denominational leaders; each poses a potential threat to the expansion of church-based Christian community development ministries that are so badly needed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129415570161664,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:15:20.989Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:04:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:33:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e98effbc-d994-4374-a277-cf05bdad0027","accessControl_ssim":["05053e0a-f16a-4254-9a67-1b0fe783b7e7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leading the African American church in the disciple making flow"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:04:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:49:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0c5b6ab7-5e9b-49ec-accc-eed37651a6c2"],"hasLease_ssim":["5978c6c2-d0cd-4905-b171-5f5cf62aab00"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Josiah U Young"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A ministry tool was developed to delineate a guided process to assist participants in remembering and reclaiming stories as a means of empowering themselves and others."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721178349174784,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:17:44.484Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:42:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:02:49Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b66be1a7-a5a7-4118-a590-f0aa0bfd9ee8","accessControl_ssim":["46cf6314-af4b-456f-aaba-8efebb6dd57c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A church that welcomes hip hoppers: preaching about hip hop in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:42:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:23:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8fdf938c-b10e-468f-9826-f632b3ba6e37"],"hasLease_ssim":["f72ca7c2-c196-442a-a646-24d7fcbe7924"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ricky Freeman"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Valencia T Jackson"],"keyword_tesim":["Experiment in worship"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Hip-hop","Christianity and culture","African American churches","Livingston Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (Covington, Ga)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Hip hop is here to stay. Hip hop is more than rap songs and music. It is a culture all its own. The author's thesis addresses preaching as a tool to invite a small congregation east of Atlanta to accept and welcome the hip hop culture into the church. The author's thesis is that when a congregation becomes knowledgeable about hip hop, it is more accepting and more open to welcoming young people that embrace hip hop. The author's method was to introduce hip hop to the congregation by hosting a hip hop concert. The author also asked the congregation to complete a questionnaire about their views on hip hop culture. The author educated the congregation by preaching a series of sermons about hip hop and its history. At the worship services during the sermons, recording artists sang hip hop songs, hip hop prayers were offered, and youth were actively involved in the worship services. The author discovered at the conclusion of her research that because the congregation was educated about hip hop culture, the members were willing to accept hip hop into Livingston Chapel CME Church. Additionally, the congregation was also more welcoming to having young people in the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128631280402432,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:53.032Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:40:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:46:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8c6b5979-9835-41bc-8e2f-efb7b7ca9126","accessControl_ssim":["f87f0036-4846-4097-9399-57be4624420f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Transformed living: exploring the effectiveness of John Wesley's class leader system as a model for Christian spiritual formation at Old Ship A.M.E. The primary focus of the class leaders is collecting money and attending to the physical well-being of their members in a limited capacity. According to the general rules written by Wesley, attention should also be given to the 'means of grace,' or the practice of spiritual disciplines. Doing so would significantly shape the lives of the members in their spiritual formation. The researcher used pre and post surveys, lectures and small group process to gether, disseminate and integrate information respectively. Readings in the areas of Wesley's class leader system and the spiritual disciplines were used to gain knowledge. The research project concluded that when persons were given tools and were intentional about learning and practicing the 'means of grace,' their spiritual journey was enhanced.
