A local church can be a catalyst for change by challenging its members to make room for the other, thereby experiencing growth and development as spiritual beings. The goal was to research whether or not the issue of systemic denial by the African American church and community help to aid the negative effect substance abuse has on individuals, families, communities, and the church. It is this writer's premise that the majority of African American churches are in a state of denial because of a lack of finances, education, and training. If denial does in fact exist, then the research would identify and give understanding to the full scope of consequences contributing to substance abuse."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130029947617280,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:06.905Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:50:13Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:17:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c693f591-9a16-4e0f-9eda-1efd32e4d04c","accessControl_ssim":["58f06526-c475-4f8c-a5e5-4228a7256bda"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Disparaging heart: the Black church's response to abandoned infants and children"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:50:13Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:49:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dcb94cb2-e20b-4f87-95eb-a405ecf33359"],"hasLease_ssim":["d6cef313-9287-46ce-806d-70fcc5888517"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Interdenominational Theological Center"],"advisor_tesim":["Edward L Smith"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Georgia--Atlanta"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Betty Ryan Jones"],"publisher_tesim":["Interdenominational Theological Center"],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Child abuse","Child welfare","African American churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to develop programs within the Black church to create awareness regarding black abandoned infants and children and their families, including other needs, that will ultimately lead to the prevention of abandonment. The author argued that the church must adjust to its new demographic context and begin to reflect the changing demographics in its membership in order to survive and to reflect the inclusive nature of God's kingdom. Also, the author believes the pastor is the major change agent in leading a congregation toward membership diversity. The case study method was employed by the author.
