Based on interviews and questionnaires distributed among bereaved families, the project constructs a model that establishes networks among families, funeral directors, support groups, and social service agencies; empowers families and support ministries to meet needs of those who experience grief; and promotes healthy pastor/parish relationships as pastors lead bereaved families and communities through stages of grief. Five congregations (United Methodist, United Church of Christ, Baptist, nondenominational, and Disciples of Christ) from Chicago and Lansing, Michigan, studied current trends in stewardship, salaries and benefits for clergy and lay staff, and outreach ministries.  The project developed new stewardship programs to encourage these congregations to re-establish themselves as servants to their communities. The project tests an assumption that expectations of preaching are changing, primarily because of increasing educational attainments of laypersons in African American churches.  Results of these investigations, presented in 24 tables, show that the majority of college students and laypersons agree on many questions concerning the importance of preaching. African American 'first churches' grew and blossomed, reflecting the diverse population, interests, and concerns of the African American community and practicing ministry from 'down-under' as Jesus did.  Taking Asbury United Methodist Church as an example of an African American first church in Washington DC, this project studies how such churches began and developed while explaining why many of them have become middle class enclaves with a privatized religious expression.  Their corporate ministry is private and detached, concerned with the institution's internal environment.
